What are the advantages I will get if I use hardener with my IH 2150 paint? It wont literally make the paint harder will it? or more durable?

It makes it cure faster, and perhaps flow out a little better. As El Toro says hardener is dangerous and cannot be filtered out with a charcoal filter. I use it (I don't use 2150) but I have the proper safety equipment. It is only necessary with urethane and a few acrylic enamels. It is not needed with alkyd enamels such as 2150.

I've used 2150 with out hardner and it works fine. As others mentioned it just doesn't cure as fast which for a piece of farm equipment really isn't that big of deal. Aklyd paints such as CIH's 2150 will look great right after you paint with it and give not too bad service if the machine is stored out the sun. Adding hardner to 2150 will not give it the durablity of a urethane or even an acrylic enamel. All depends on what you want for finish.

Not sure what 2150 costs where you are but here its $67/gal. You can buy the industrail urethane 1 gal. kit (parts A +B) for not much more.

I think hardener is good to use. Ever since they quit putting lead in paint, alkyd has gotten pretty crummy. I think the hardener makes the paint preform more like the lead based paint.

i used hardner with my 2150 .. if only for the cure time benefits.

if you think you might be the least bit sensitive to the iso's in the hardner.. then take the proper precautions.

I paint outside in open air. if you paint inside.. a self contained breathing system would be mandatory.

since i paint outside. I reaaly need the fast cure... I have no place where i could paint inside.. etc...

Soundguy, I consider supplied air essential outside too, although you will get less of it. BUT, since a charcoal mask will not filter iso's you still get a significant amount. Pick any day you want and with your back to the wind WITHOUT a mask pretend that you are painting with a can of oven cleaner, I promise you that you will smell it. So the mask works for oven cleaner, but not isocyanates. If the day is calm you will get more of it. There have been people on this forum that got sick outside, they now use supplied air.

With a New 3-M mask with a negative fit check ,
I would not be afraid to spray hardened paint outside .

The reason Iso paints are not approved for ISO"s is because they have poor odor warning qualities .

But the paint has good odor warning qualitles .

I wont spray ISO paint inside without supplied air .

at this point , many dozen paint jobs tells me i'm not the least bit sensitive to it.

I mentioned taking appropriate precautions.

II use hardner because i paint outside and need fast cure to prevent dut/bugs from finding the tractor. i don't have the luxory of a paint booth. and I don't paint enough of them for supplied air systems.

one day i should get my wife to get her old scuba stuff out and make ne a frog suit. :)

who uses charcoal maskes anymore? plety of WAY better things out there.

if nothing else, milspec NBC mask with a cartridge can be had for as low as 5$ and they will grab hydrogen sulfide past 'escape' level', which is what all commercial units offer.. plus nerve agents too . I wouldn't use a plain charcoal mask to paint my house with acrylic laytex water based paint. :)

"who uses charcoal maskes anymore? plety of WAY better things out there"
I do, unless I am using hardener. The 3M cartridges I use are made for oil based paint, and are not recommended for iso's. For the other items there are different cartridges. As to water based house paint, I don't so that much of it. I also use charcoal masks for removing rust or almost any time I use a wire brush on a drill or an angle grinder, it's the paper masks that are worthless. As far as saying you are not sensitive to iso's, you aren't now, but you will be if you keep doing it. Then, you may have to quit. One use of supplied air is a precaution to keep you from becoming sensitive, in particular those who paint a lot like you do. But, that is your business. Actually my response is not directed at you, but to others who may be sensitive and think they can get by with charcoal. Some can some can't. As for me painting outside, in western Kansas that is almost impossible, average wind speed is around 20 mph, 40 mph gusts are common. We may have a few days in a row of relatively calm winds, then 4 or 5 when it never stops.

that's alotta wind. that's be a killer on paint.

during our non rainy season we have plenty of calm days with 2-5mph winds.

i like that say around 3-4mph.. I consider that ideal.

ditto onthe paper masks being worthless.

I don't even like the 'upgrade' charcoal lined ones for house painting. I go ahead and put on my regular good paint rig mask for house painting. I think that stuff stinks worse than some auto paints. when we do our house.. we typically stay at a friends or get a room at the cheap hotel for the night. stuff gives me a headache... weird. and that's just the water based stuf.. go figure.

one day.. If i keep up the painting schedule.. I guess i'll have to get SA. Not getting any younger. seems like every year something else that used to be no problem 20ys ago now hurts the day after. :)
