OT/horse trailer paint problem

I have an Elite Mustang model aluminum horse trailer. Made the mistake of having the aluminum acid washed. Within a year the painted areas started chalking.

What, if anything, can I do to help stop that?

nancy, short of a repaint, you could try some sea-power marine cleaner wax. its a heavier duty wax with a mild abrasive in it used on boats. you can apply it with a paste wax applicator pad and work it in good, then let it dry and remove it like a normal car wax. if you are adventerous, pick up a power waxer buffer from an auto parts store, they are about 30 or 40 dollars, and will have an applicator pad and polishing bonnett. work in the shade. maybe just have james wax it while you set back and have a lemonade!!!!

Thanks, glennster. I had asked once before. Didn"t know what kind of a pad I needed, should have just asked you.

Can I use a pad with a drill or really need to purchase the wax buffer?

Another problem - no shade to work in here in Dallas. Would have to haul the trailer to the farm to get to some shade. Would doing a little late in the evening be ok?

a drill with a pad would be a real pia. i would try by hand first, and see how that works out. late in the day would be way better if there is no shade. let the surface cool down before applying the wax.

I saw the nicest little unrestored yellow Rambler at a car show. One owner and little old lady deal. It was the nicest car there and won in its class.

Once a year she had wiped the entire car with kerosine. I have always wondered what it would do to a chalky old tractor. In this case I believe I would try it. If it looks good when it is wet it would look good rubbed with diesel.

Guys that have trucks with aluminum fuel tanks and wheels often like to keep a polish on them. I know a guy who does it as a sideline thing and he is not real expensive, so I expect that you have a number of them in the Dallas area. You could look for ads posted at your local truck stop and just get a quote for the job. You may find that it is worth it to you.
