I"m about to start working on a John Deere 40. Main concern right now it getting it running to use for work. It won"t ever be a parade tractor.
That said, I don"t won"t it to go down hill and be a rust bucket and I want to keep it original.
I was thinking of buying a hand sander, and if I need to take something off that has surface rust, sand it and primer it with a can of spray primer. Just to keep the surface rust from taking over. Then maybe somewhere down the road, getting it painted right
I know nothing about painting! Is this a no-no, will the can primer not last?
Main goal is to get the tractor going for work and keep it going uphill rather than downhill.
Thanks

The only waterproof primer is 2 part epoxy. So yours will still rust. My opinion is if you can't do it right now, leave it alone.

What you have planned will work alright but I would plan on using rattle can topcoat as well. Then when it comes time to "paint it right" take everything off down to bare metal and go back with epoxy primer. If you want what you do to be permanent you might take one part at a time off the tractor and refinish it correctly. That way it wouldn't be such an overwhelming job at once.

Since you want to use your tractor for work and not parade duty I see no reason why spray can paint will not serve your purpose. The important thing is to enjoy your tractor and have fun learning how to work on it and paint.

All my tractors are working girls and do not wear a fancy coat of paint. If I need to paint something the paint comes from a rattle can and I don't worry about it.

do you have the rust controlled right now? ie.. sanded off.. wire wheeled off.. sand blasted off?

if so.. for 100$ you can buy a cheap paint gun.. a gllon of alkyd enamil, a gallon of primer and a couple gallons of naptha.

you can shoot the primer and then paint it. have a day or 2 tied up in it. it will then be sealed and protected from rust well enough to use. later on you can refinish better.
