I was reading a note lower about primers, seems epoxy primer is widely used. I have a JD front end I want to prime and paint. Who makes a good epoxy primer and does it come in a spray can or is it a two part material. Sorry, I know so little. In the past I have just use the JD yellow primer but I have not always been happy with he performance. I went and looked at the can and no mention of epoxy. Your help would be appreciated. Paul

I use PPG's OMNI MP170 epoxy primer. I think it's an excellent, reasonably priced bare metal primer for about any topcoat. Yes, it's a two part product so it's not available in a spray can. But it is iso-free. Still not good to breathe but does not require a supplied-air respirator. Try some. I think you will become a convert after you do.

PPG or Dupont make good primers. An epoxy primer is available in a spray can but is frightfully expensive, about 22 dollars a can. The hardener is kept seperate in the can until you twist a lever and it introduces the hardener into the paint.

I've used Kirker Epoxy and like it. Somewhat cheaper than the big names but works well for me.

I've bought it here:

I think it was around $120 for a little over 2 sprayable gallons, 1 gal primer, 1 gal activator + a little thinner if needed in your gun.

I agree with Rod, below, but will add it goes a long way as you just need one coat or two if you aren't quite adept at coverage but a couple quarts would do a complete tractor even dissassembled if you plan your sprayings efficiently. If you need a gallon you are doing something wrong. The MP 170 is the best bang for the buck.
