Paint Removal

I am wanting to repaint my Deere 2020 and have been reading up on paint removal here. I dont have time or energy to do a full tear down to media blast and repaint this since it is a working tractor. It seems that aircraft stripper seems to be pretty common for paint removal but it is some nasty stuff. Google searching led me to this and I was wondering if anyone had tried it? It is biodegradable and non toxic which is a big bonus since that makes cleanup much easier.

I am not familiar with Smart Strip but I use regular paint stripper and a hot water pressure washer. That combination will cut through the paint, the hard grease and any oily film out of every nook and cranny. The hot water really helps remove all of the oily residue using a lot less chemicals. Another benefit of using the hot water washer is that the water evaporates faster causing less surface rust when it drys. You can rent the hot water washers for a half day which is plenty of time to clean a tractor or a regular pressure washer would be the next best option.

I hadn't thought of renting a hot water pressure washer. That would be much nicer than the regular cold water treatment. I'll call the local equipment rental place and ask about prices on half day use. Thanks for the tip.

Well they don't say what is in the stripper. If it were me I wouldn't buy it. I'm a professional furniture refinisher. The stripper looks so mild I think it would take forever to get the paint off. They boast about not having methylene chloride in it but that is exactly what I would look for. The best retail remover I've used is Kleen Strip. It's available at walmart for less than 20.00 a gallon. A better remover if you didn't mind the hasmat fees in shipping is Kwick Kleen #145 remover. It's about 90.00 for 5 gal. You would also need stripping gloves that go up to your elbow. The stuff is really hot.

The power washer whether using it with hot or cold water is a good idea. It will get paint out of corners you could never get otherwise.

The stripper for lacquers is different from the stripper for uros. You should know what base paint you want to remove to get the best product. I get these strippers at garage sales and all work somewhat but not totally . I still end up sanding . Scraping in some lines with a razor blade holder helps too. It gives it an in for the underlying layers.Worse part of a paint job yet bare metal is the safest bet.
