The original subject was "lead paint".

Its not a big deal unless you intend to sand 25 tractors with lead paint .

NAPA"s commerical coatings had lead until at least 2008 ,It lasted good .

I would still use lead paint if i could get it .

The green freaks have messed up everything for no reason

It hasn't made any difference in PPG products as far as I can tell. I think the colors are a little different, but the dealer can change the toners to suit. PPG MTK acrylic urethane still lists lead in some colors. I imagine DuPont and NAPA are the same unless you mean really cheap paint.

On one hand you have visions that everyone has to suffer because some bad parents let their children sit for days chewing on the woodwork. But then the public is stupid with chemicals and paint. I wonder how many cribs, playpens and high chairs were painted with left over tractor paint containing lead. If everyone would use the proper paint for the right application the government probably wouldn't intervene. They probably would have just banned lead based paint on childrens items. I miss lead based paint as much as anyone.

If proctetive gear is work ,spraying lead paint is no more dangerous than anything esle .

Actually its likley safer than the high Iso. loads of some polyurethanes .

unfortunately, lead is very toxic. it stays in the environment for a long time. sanding it generates an inhalation hazard, as well as the atomized paint when applying. when the vehicle is ultimately scrapped and melted down, the lead is released again. typical consumer use does generate quite a bit of toxic waste. the spray booth here at my shop runs 98% efficiency filters to trap voc emissions. we dispose of all waste products thru an epa licenced waste hauler. current cost is about 700 dollars for a 55 gallon drum. if you using the proper safety gear, it is a lot safer. how many home painters are wearing supplied air, paint suit, nitrile gloves ect and disposing of the generated waste correctly. the products are nasty.

Could be, I don't use cheap paint, even with lead in it doesn't last long. When alkyd enamel/acrylic lacquer were used on factory painted cars they faded badly in a couple of years. Could be retained with wax but it eventually gave up. Modern paint is immeasurably better, lead or not. I don't worry about lead or iso's because I use the proper protection. That said the acrylic modified alkyd enamel paints sold by tractor dealers aren't that bad.

Guys complain about the [voluntary] removal of the lead from 1-Shot brand signpainters lettering enamel but since alot of got on your hands and it keeps you from poisoning yourself I didn't mind one bit. A few colors were a little weak at first but they seem to have gotten it straightened out.Lead paint is the best covering paint though no doubt about it. I beleive it is still in marine paints. Mostly affects children as the brain is not developed yet. Could be a nightmare if you own rental property.
