restoring a john deere 830i. heard some positives and negatives about the john deere paint bought at the dealerships. does it fade as bad as some have said ?? or work great like others have said ??? I just want to make the right choice before I drop the $$$ on all this paint ! thanks

Why pay $40 per yd for carpeting when you can get carpeting for $20 per yd? That $20 carpeting will serve you well IF you close up the home and never walk on it or it never gets used/abused or exposed to direct sunlight. Also,if you happen to move you will want to tell the new owners that they too must keep the house closed up and never use or walk on the carpeting. You get what you pay for. It all looks good when "new". Oh, I almost forgot, if you want to keep it all original, you must use "original" JD dealer paint.lol

ALL paint will fade when exposed to the sun and weather. Makes NO difference what brand it is.

I'm pretty sure you are NOT going to go to all the work and trouble of restoring that tractor, only to leave it set outside, so use the JD paint, and park that tractor in the shed when it is not at a show or in a parade and you will be just fine.

If it is acrylic modified alkyd enamel, it will be ok--for a while. If it is the old alkyd enamel it will fade rapidly if outside. The can won't tell you--you might ask someone on the JD forum. If you bite the bullet and get urethane (supplied air needed to protect your lungs) it will last for years. There is a BIG difference in urethane and the cheaper paints.

Will it fade ... sure over time, depends if its parked inside when not in use and also where you live. Will it fade as bad as say the cheap $20/gal enamel rust paints they sell at home depot in JD green no. I've painted implements with IH red and NH red and they have stood up pretty good over the last 10-12 years all things concidered. They got nicks and scratches in them now but thats not the paint's fault. The color is still real good as they are stored inside.

For me it depends on the degree of prep. If I'm going to spend weeks detailing something, blasting parts, sanding etc. I'd want to put on a better quality paint. If its something I'm degreasing, wire brushing off loose paint and so forth I just spray on the Machinery enamel from CIH.

all paint fades to some extent, but whatever they are painting cars with sure lasts longer than the cheap after market paint out there. Bill
