1942 JD Painting

Hello,

I would like recommendations on what kind of paint to use on repainting a 1942 JD B. I will be completing stripping it down to bare metal. What kind of primer and paint do you think would be best to use? Never painted a tractor before.

Thanks

All depends on how much $ you want to spend and the equipment you have (fresh air supplied breathing or not). If you look through the forum you will see there are as many opinions as there are people. However, the consensus is to use epoxy primer and then a good quality paint. Some require hardeners (need supplied air system to breathe) others don't. Also a talk with the local supplier would be good. They will be able to give you an idea on costs and options in your area.

So are you getting the machine sand blasted? As mentioned depends on how much you want to spend, equipment, and experience. If this is your first crack at painting I'd say go with the paint from you're local JD dealer.

Yes I want to sandblast the whole tractor. I have started sand blasting smaller parts. I have not painted a tractor before but have sprayed other things. Just want a durable paint, but sounds like the JD classic green is going to be fine with harder.

Whatever you do, don't sandblast anything that can't be taken off the frame. (IE don't blast the frame). I don't care how well you duct tape off and seal things, the sand will still find a way in to places where you don't want it. Seen it done. Best to simply wire wheel/strip the frame and sandblast all the pieces.

I recently took my Allis WD45 down to the frame, left the engine and rear end together and then soda blasted it. Worked out pretty nice.

Hardener does not make the paint last longer. It makes it cure faster, thus it is easier to repair and may give a little more gloss, that is all. UV protection, if any, is in the paint. not the hardener.
