I recenlty rebuilt the rear end of my tractor and for some reason I drcided to take the trumpets dowm to bar metal. When I noticed the flash rust I applied some linseed oil to the cast metal. Is there another product that I can use to protect the metal while it waits to be painted besides primer? It is all put back together now and is my only tractor.

If it were me I would just put a coat of epoxy primer on as you go but you don't want that. I sure wouldn't use linseed oil unless you plan to use an alkyd primer. The only option I can think of is to use Picklex-20 to control the flash rust.

So if I wanna use the epoxy primer I need to remove the linseed oil with somoething like brake clearner? Is the exopy promer somenthing that can be applied with a brush?

Remove the linseed oil with wax and grease remover, use several applications to get it out of the pores. Forget brake cleaner, gasoline, etc and only use products made for the purpose. Picklex 20 is ok, but it may be hard to get out or the pores and may lift the paint later. I have used Picklex that way once and did not have problems, however I don't like that idea. Picklex works only if the parts are kept inside and dry. Best to apply epoxy with a spray gun, but you can use a brush. Depending on the brand there is a window ranging from about 3 to 7 days in which the epoxy has to be topcoated. If you don't topcoat it in that time period you must scuff it and apply another coat and topcoat within the window. But if the tractor is inside and not used I would ignore the rust and clean it off before painting. I have kept bare metal inside for as long as a year without rust but I live in a dry climate.

You can also use lacquer thinner to take off the linseed oil. Epoxy primer can be brushed. I would use as soft of a brush as you can find and apply it thin with as few brush strokes as possible. The more you brush it the more the brush marks would show. It might be worthwhile to get a cheap harbor freight gravity feed sprayer to where you could mix small batches and use nearly every drop. I think the sprayers only run about 20 bucks. It might be cheaper than brushes if you let the epoxy set up on the brush.

Yep I like the rusty metal primer and all the rustoleum products I have tried.
Best thing for farm machinery.
