Drying Time

It would vary depending on the what type of paint you use but I would just let the paint dry a couple of days. The tire people are going to tear the paint all up anyway so you might as well get it over with and retouch the wheels. Unless the inside of the rim needs painting I've gotten to where I have new tires mounted first then paint the rims. It's a pain to mask the rubber off but I would rather paint the rims once.

I would've used an epoxy primer on the rims. As been mentioned several days should be enough for drying for the final coats. I didn't use epoxy primer on my Sears lawn trailer rims and they had pin holes from the rust. I had to put tubes in the tires. I should've removed the tires when it was new and used either acid or epoxy primer. Hal

like stephen said, depends on the paint. for a rustoleum type, a couple days, also, i have been coating the inside of the rims with 2 brush on coats of por 15 rust conversion primer. seals the rims and is tough as nails. i run calcium in most of my tractors, so if i get a leak, it doesnt rust the rim out. heres a couple pics of my cub rim

Thanks all for the info. I painted the rims with John Deere paint from the dealer and added hardener. They turn out really nice just Dred the tire mount to mess them up.

if they are rear rims, mount them on the tractor and install the tires yourself. duck tape the tire spoons and use either rue-glyde (tire lube) or murphys oil soap. fronts are a little trickier, but if your careful its not that hard. i feel better if i scratch a fresh painted rim as opposed to some tire jockey that doesnt care.

I took mine to les schwab and told the tire guy that if there was even a scratch on either rim, I wasn't going to be happy. I left them there for a week so they could do it when they weren't in a rush. Got them back and not a scratch on them. Very impressed. I also used JD paint with hardener. They look like I mounted the tires and then painted them.
