steering wheel repair/restore

I purchased a steering wheel repair kit from the Eastwood company, and I am getting ready to repair 2 old IHC steering wheels, both hard rubber/plastic. One is for a 1938 F-14 tractor and one is for a 1949 KB5 truck.

I am fairly comfortable with the repair part, what I am struggling with or better yet, researching is what paint to use on the wheel. The repair manual that came with the kit suggests polyester primer and paint. I wanted to get other thoughts on what paints may be best. Gloss black on the truck steering wheel and a semi-gloss finish on the tractor wheel are what I am shooting for.

Anyone here do this before? Suggestions?

I can't speak on your kit but I restored a bakelite steering wheel last year using PC-7 epoxy. The wheel had about a 100 hairline cracks all around it and I took an angle grinder and ground a v on each of the breaks and filled with the epoxy and sanded it level. I then sanded it smooth and painted the wheel with Rustoleum Paint For Plastic. The steering wheel looked like brand new and the paint is holding up well. The hairline cracks are back though so the next time it will be a reproduction steering wheel for me.

I had [have] a cracked old 1950"s IH steering wheel, and I went to O"Reilly"s and bought a spray can of black truck bed coating. Sprayed about 4 or 5 coats, sanded off the rough spots, sprayed again, andit came out OK. Nice grippy surface, black, and can be as smooth or rough as you like.
