Tractor Paint Recomendation

Hello All, I posted earlier, just a few posts
below in fact, that I am intending on painting my
Massey Ferguson Industrial 40 tractor. Currently
it an "Off yellow," by off I mean lots of rust
mixed in with a little bit of yellow. She runs
like a top, but looks awful.

Can someone make a recommendation of paint brand
(and quantities) to do this... both primer and top
coat. I'm not looking for a factory finish, or a
show finish. I love the tractor, but she is a
work machine, I just want to make her look a
little better.

I'd like her to be the "new cat yellow," the more
creamy yellow I guess.

Thanks very much. Also, can I order paint online,
or is that pick-up only?

Well I guess I'll chime in here and get you some guide lines at least. First of all , your biggest problem will be all the rust you elude to. Forget the wire brushes etc , if you want this to last even a few years you need to get rid of the rust. Blasting is the best option for what you are dealing with. Primer doesn't stop rust that's allready rthere. I am also assuming that the pits that are there after removing the rust are not an issue ? or are they? If not then blast it and use 2 component epoxy primer and shoot it with whatever paint type your pocket book will stand. If you don't intend to fix the pits then you may want to opt for a semi-gloss or even flat finish. A glossy finish will make it look like crap. A low quallity synthetic enamel will eventually be flat anyway but not in a uniform way. Forget the hardners , you don't need them for what you are asking for. Bottom line is prep it right and prime it with the good stuff and paint with whatever you can afford.. Now if you change your mind and want it to look new then there will be a whole lot more to it in time and dollars but we can get you there also.
Probably 2 gal since yellow usually doesn't cover well at all. Forget the online paint purchase in my opinion.

So off yellow is the paint is off of it huh. As much work as it is to paint a tractor I would recommend you use an automotive 2k urethane. It's expensive but if it keeps you from having to do that job again for many years I think it's worth it. I would recommend regardless of what paint you use to strip the old paint and rust off and prime with an epoxy primer. The epoxy primer will stop the rust problem you are having. To topcoat it you might use PPG Concept or Dupont Nason. Any store in your area that sells automotive paint should sell one or the other. I think most Napa stores sell Dupont paint. I would recommend that you get a air supplied respirator to use these paints.

Hey There, Thank you very much for your input. The only parts that are really deeply rusty (I am a merchant mariner, my rust scale might be different as rust is a way of life here) is the sheet metal. With regards to that, I was entertaining have a local body shop blast those parts (hood, fenders, gauge console)

The rest of the cast parts I'm pretty sure I can get good enough for my goal.

To be honest, that cast parts are probably more chipped paint and grease than anything. The sheet metal looks awful.

thank you so much for your help though... any thoughts on a good paint manufacturer? We use PPG on the ship, not sure where I can get that at home though.

Catalyst paint systems (hardners) have Isocyanates which are the nasty toxic chemicals.

Air supplied mask/hood is what you should use for these paints in your typical farm shop enviroment. As a farm shop/car garage doesn't have the air movement like a comercial paint booth (like u see on tv shows) that has an air exchange every 30 seconds or what ever.
