masking fresh paint

i just finished painting the first of the two colors on my hood on sunday morning, how long should I wait to mask off the hood on the fresh paint to keep the paint from peeling when the tape is removed after painting the second color

A lot would depend on what type of paint you are using and what the weather conditions were when you painted it. Assuming you used an oil based enamel and the weather was cool I would wait until next sunday morning before putting tape on the paint. Automotive paints would dry faster.

Lots of different tape out these days too.
But I used to stick it to my pants first to help make it not so sticky.

It isn't a matter of peeling off the uncured paint. If the surface was sanded correctly adhesion won't be the issue. Tape tracking will be the issue. If this is uncatylized paint (no hardner) I wouldn't tape on it for a month and get it out in the sun for that month if you can. Then use 3M green tape and double or triple your masking paper. Reason for these is the reducer/solvent in the second painting will soak through , or try to , and if it succeeds then it will tape track or dull down the first painting . If you use cheaper tape then double or triple it also.

I've never experienced tape tracking on alkyd enamel after it dries a week. In hot weather 24 hours is enough. I don't leave the tape on there for days at a time though. If I can't complete the project in 24 hours I remove the tape and tape again another day.

I guess a good method would be to lay your thumb on the paint and press for 30 seconds. If you can see your thumb print then don't tape on it until you can't.

There are tapes made for just that purpose. When I painted my Farmall 450 I used one called frog tape. It was designed for use on new paint and it went on good and came off a very nice.It came off with crisp lines and no bleeding.

I had the same question. Thanks for asking and the answers. I just painted the first of 2 colors on my hood on Monday.
