Allis Chalmers D17 paint

I was wanting to know the correct silver or gray paint for the rear wheels of a D17 series III tractor. Found previous info on the web of a DuPont paint code of DS022D and turned out to be a gray. Is this correct or is there a silver paint code that is correct?

I think the IH rims and Allis rims were made by the same company(ies) and were both galvanized. On my Farmall tractors I use PPG 8568 which is a GM rally wheel color. It is also called aluminum but is not as shiny, it is a silver gray color, not a copy of the galvanizing. Others will have their own opinion but there is no official color for IH, I think the same is true for Allis.

As CNKS said this came up a little while back and as he said no one else had ever come across galvanized IH rims. It appears to most of us that the rims of most tractors like my Fords and your Allis were just left the silver that the mfg. painted them which is still the same silver. My opinion is that any silver, like the silver that truck bumpers are painted will be good. One of the car manufacturers calls it Argent. Just Don't use the aluminum stuff that rubs off and looks red neck.

"As CNKS said this came up a little while back and as he said no one else had ever come across galvanized IH rims." I did not say that -- a few people on the Farmall forum, one in particular, say that they have not seen galvanized rims. I have 6 Farmall tractors. Galvanizing was found on all of them under their lousy paint jobs. My dad had a new 47 H with galvanized rims along with a 39? H and 2 B's with galvanized rims. I have never owned a Allis Chalmers or even been close to one, but I imagine they were the same way. As to a "later" model I have a 1958 International that had galvanized rims before I sandblasted them. Paint came at some later date and did not have a code, IH just specified that they resist rust. I agree with you about not using straight aluminum.

CNKS sorry I did not reread your post. What I was going by in my response was "others will have their own opinion". I assumed, perhaps incorrectly that you were referencing the recent thread about galvanized wheels, and my recollection, and I probably should have researched back thoroughly, instead of going by memory, was that of a number of responses no one remembered galvanized rims. So I am sorry that I hastily typed away without thoroughly researching what I was referring to.
