i have a 49' ac c that im restoring, back in late summer when i started to work on it i had wire wheeled some parts to remove the paint. when i had some free time in early feb i tried to wire wheel the torque tube i was having a tough time getting the paint to come off, i was using a 6" and a 4 1/2" wire wheel it seemed to me like it wasnt coming off like i remembered it did in late summer, i was in an unheated garage and the temp was in the mid to high 20's this week i had some spare time after work and the weather was in the 40's i tried the wire wheels again and the paint came off easier, so does the air temp affect the removal of paint?

If you were using a paint remover like oven cleaner I could tell you yes, temp makes a big difference. For wire brushing I would think that the more brittle the paint is as in colder, it would come off better.

I think unless you are using solvents, temperature wouldn't make enough difference to talk about. For mechanically stripping metal, I've had pretty good luck with a silicon carbide paint stripping wheel on a angle grinder. The best is sand blasting. Paint and varnish remover works good too but needs warm weather. It practically stops working below 70 degrees.

Rule of thumb is that just about ANY chemical reaction - paint drying, stripper stripping, bread dough rising - doubles its speed for every 10 degree C increase in temperature.
