what is the benefit of adding hardner to the paint. The last tractor i painted i did not but am getting ready to paint another and was debating on using it.

It will dry quicker, the paint will be harder and more resistant to chemicals and the environment, and it will last longer.

Since the potato heads made them take lead out of paint an alkyd enamel isn't much good. Putting hardener in the paint almost makes the paint as good as the old lead based paint. It will make it more durable and well worth using. It you are spraying it be sure to use a good respirator and very good ventilation. The isocyanide hardeners for alkyd paints have the same health risks as in automotive paints. A person really needs to use a air supplied respirator. You could put your lungs in the condition of a lifelong cigarette smoker painting one tractor if you breathe enough of it and most respirators won't filter it out. I would paint outdoors and stay upwind from the paint.

Doesn't nessessarily make it "dry" quicker but does make it "cure" quicker and all the way through instead of curing from the top down. Akin to adding catylist to fiberglass resin and making a boat. There is a resin in the paint that reacts with the catylist to chemically cure it all the way through. Synthetic enamel or alkyd enamel even with hardner is not an equal product to urethane with catylist. It may make it cure faster but it is still an inferior based paint to the others. It will still stain from gas and other fluids.

I know by adding it to the paint it will hold its shine for years compared to paint with out hardener.

A little gas or oil won't affect paint with hardener near as badly as paint only.
