Running Repairs Painting

Bit of a qiestion of morality rather than technique...

I have a 49 Model R Deere in 'original' beat up condition.

I have had to make several repairs and replacements which need a lick of paint.

Should I paint the effected areas with fresh JD paint, or should I disguise them with matt 'pea green' paint to match the weathering on the neighbouring panels?

If it were me and had no intention of ever restoring the tractor, I would make it look old to the point of distressing the parts you paint. That's just me though. I do a lot of antique repair.

I dont know about the states, but here in the UK my beat up old R is worth more as is, than if I restored it, so I think that I will just keep patching her up and using it

Hi
Good call on that. I work on old equipment here in Canada. some of our parts equivalent to say your Vapormatic, come painted the correct colors.
when fitted to older rougher stuff they stick out like a red house in the snow. and make the unit look like it should all be painted.
Some times its fun to see all the new parts like this on a pile of junk in a sale and the unit sells for less than the $2000 of the stuff they put on and the mechanics time doing it L.O.L.
Regards Robert

Morality doesn't even enter into it. It's your tractor isn't it ??? You aren't misrepresenting it to a potential buyer. Even if you were selling it , unless you bought it new there are bound to be things repaired or replaced on it that you don't know about. It's an old tractor , do what you want.

You can't make it match, so either paint the whole thing or leave it alone. Older parts will show less next to old faded paint than they will with new paint. Based on what you said in your other post, you will probably leave it alone.

if the repairs are bare metal.. hit then with some kind of paint to seal. if pre-painted parts.. .. i'd just bolt on and go

It's nearly impossible to get it matched. Better to have it obviously painted and new than a poor attempt at matching.
