Painting 601

Been hard at work on my 601 with 172 engine and 720 loader (had to split for new clutch, etc and also bit for adding power steering assembly)
Figured since I had my poor beast about completely torn down, I would make it pretty and last a bit.
Bought some Majic acrylic paint with hardener from TSC in Ford Red.
Anyone know how close this will be to original paint for a Ford 601?
Hopefully reasonably close....but if you have experience with this paint, please let me know.
Thanks!

I wanted to get some parts powder coated so when they came back I took the battery tray to the paint jobber and got it digitally analyzed to mach. The powder coat color was hot orange or something like that. It is not quite as orange as it should be but I like it.

Most people on the IH forum don't like it--best to take it back and get, at the least, paint from your NH dealer. It's not acrylic, it is alkyd, 30's technology.

I don't know anything about the Majic paint but I do know any alkyd enamel is bad to fade especially a red paint. As much trouble as it is to paint a tractor, if you really care I would use a automotive paint. Otherwise in 3-4 years you might have a pink tractor.

Showcrop....that sure is eyecandy!

CNKS...I stand corrected, it is indeed alkyd. Whar did thy not like about it? I'm not looking for show tractor....just want it to look decent and hold up under use.

As Stephen says it fades and it is not durable. Alkyd is the worst paint you can buy.

Interesting......Tractor Supply and AgriSupply sure seem to stock it by the boatload for 'idjits' like me. Maye they will refund my $$$. If not...I'll paint with it and it will look better for a while. [/i]

i thought valspar was maiking the 2150? is it an acrilic modified alkyd? or?

i flipped for that on the C and H.. cost more than the tsc valspar I can tell ya...

2150 used to say acrylic modifed alkyd enamel. The can no longer says that but I imagine it still is. I have never used it. Valspar makes everything from junk to urethane.

We referred to that cheap paint as whale oil. Buy either PPG, Dupont or Martin Senour. A farmer in Ohio always has used Martin Senour Crossfire paint when painting tractors. Here are some pictures of his painted tractors. Hal

The 2150 went on good. It cost more than the plain alkyd valspar that TSC used to carry. Reduced a little differently but went down pretty good after some test sprays.
