how to charge for restoration

What is the going rate or how do you charge for a
restoration? Is it so many hours for so many dollars of parts?
You guys know what I am asking. Now these won't be show
stoppers but nice looking the same. THANKS.

I don't restore tractors for pay however I do restoration work on other things and you can't relate parts to the price. You could have one tractor that was well cared for to restore and another that has had a hard life and previous bad restoration work. The tractor that has a hard life is going to take 10 times more labor to restore just because you have to scratch your head trying to undo what others have done to it even though it may take the same dollar parts as the good tractor. I would price parts and labor completely separate.

So on average what does everyone charge, per hour or per tractor? I at least don't want to loose money. I'm ok with breaking even.I've just had requests to restore the family tractors. Thanks everyone

if you are doing it as side work and not a regular business, 20 to 25 dollars/hr. bill your paint and materials separate. if you are shooting base/clear or single stage automotive, you will be in the 500 to 1000 dollar range. sandpaper, thinners, primers, wax and grease removers and strippers dont come cheap. as a ball park, for a clean, degrease, strip, prime, dent removal on the sheetmetal, prime and block, then shoot, you will have anywhere from 80 to 120 hours in the job, if its done right. that is for body and paint only, on a farmall m size tractor. a lot of dis-assembly, cabinet blasting of small parts, re-assembly ect.

You get a spindle, a clock, and a four coulumn ledger.
In the ledger log the daTE, VENDOR AND COST OF EVERY single dime you spend for materials and parts. Stick the receipt on the spindle.
Log the date, job, and hours in another section.
Log the date , type of work done, and cost for all out of shop repairs done by others in another section.
For family and "break even" I would charge just 8 dollars an hour. It's still going to be a big number.
A good restoration on an H will cost them $8000. Do they want to spend that kind of money?
Add 1000 for an M and 2000 for SMTA.
Glenster, can you do a complete restoration all new tires on an M for $9000?

gordo, the last m i did for a customer, i will call it a re-paint, not a full restoration, went around 12,5000. new clutch, trans seals, pto seals, valve job, new tires, lights, wiring harness, the strip and re-paint.
