I have used both HVLP and suction and by far the HVLP is better in my book. Granted undersides are a little tougher (and I use my mini touch up gun for areas I can't reach with my HVLP) but for large areas I don't think it can be beat. It does use more air, but I don't have to worry about vent holes plugging. I got my set from Northern Tool on sale for $100 and that gave me a big primer gun, a big paint gun, a touch up gun and an air regulator. I am just about finished painting a 49 Chevy truck and have had no problems with the guns. I have been using them for about 6-7 years and have done a half dozen tractors with them. I find the spray to be more even and a finer spray then with suction. Plus guns are easier to clean out. :) Just my 2 cents worth.
