paint too orange

i painted my Ford 960 with van sickle 8N red on Monday night. I used their super premium paint with hardener. I am not happy with the orange tint to the red.

If i decide to repaint it a different shade of red possibly from a different paint manufacturer what do I need to do for surface prep? Can I just spray a new primer coat or do i need to degloss the new paint with TSP or something similar?

this is not a restoration just a repaint for work horse - i do want the right color

thanks

paul

You will have to degloss. You could use a red scratch pad to de gloss it. Just make sure it is good and dry before trying to go over it. Nothing like having the bottom layer bubble and peel and have the top coat look like crap.

It wouldn't be a problem putting another coat of paint with a different brand of paint as long as it was the same type of paint. I'm not familiar with the paint however it appears to be an alkyd so if you put a different type of paint with a stronger solvent it could wrinkle up the existing paint ruining it. The best way to tell is if the paint you are using says to thin with mineral spirits or napatha, then its a alkyd. If your not sure on the new paint put some on in a inconspicuous space and see how it reacts. Other than that all you would have to do is scuff the existing paint with fine sandpaper or scotchbrite pad and your good to go.

Sounds like you got XX1 orange red instead of vermillion. I find it hard to trust those Italians with the right color for my Fords so I have gotten it digitally analyzed.

mirroring what gordo said, painted my john deere r with off the shelf napa paint and hardener, was off several shades.had them color match a n.o.s. part but had to wait 30 days according to the can.turned out good the second time around. Bill
