pickup truck paint job cost?

What does a good paint job on a 1/2 ton extended cab truck cost these days? (rust and dent free)
I"m considering buying a nice rust free body from out west and swapping the body parts over myself.

typical complete at a shop will run 4 to 6 thousand. (not a maaco job) but a factory type finish. will pull all moldings, trim, glass, weatherstrips, bumpers, headlamps, and set back the bed to get to the rear of the cab. you will be putting close to a thousand dollars in paint and material on the vehicle for a quality line base/clear.

Have a Maaco paint it for under a g who cares if you paint it ever other year have done it to several vehicles looks decent and never had any problems too many body shops asking crazy amounts wonder if they ever get hungry at the dinner table charging the crazy prices they do

he was looking for a price on a good paint job, not a maaco job. maaco will wash the car, scuff it, tape it off without any dis-assembly and shoot a cheap,low grade automotive paint product on it. there will be minor door dings, over spray here and there, and you will get a couple years out of the paint job. if you are happy with it , fine. they will put the car thru in 1 to 2 days. when i do a complete here at my shop, it will take 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. everything comes off the vehicle, glass, moldings, trim, bed, tail gate grille, bumpers, headlamps, inner door trims, door glass ect. all dents and dings are identified and repaired. entire vehicle is sanded/stripped as necessary. corrosion resistant primer is applied. next, surfacer is applied and car is block sanded. any imperfections at this point are corrected. next a second coat of surfacer is applied along with a guide coat, vehicle is then blocked sanded again looking for any more imperfections and corrected as necessary. at this point either another primer coat is applied, or a sealer if necessary. then the vehicle is wet sanded with another guide coat and checked again. if all good, vehicle is then washed again, masked, prepped and moved into the booth. in the booth, final prep is done, wax and grease remover is applied, tack ragged then base color is applied. generally 2-3 coats of base. next 2 -3 coats of clear is applied. and the vehicle is then baked in the booth. after the baking process, the vehicle is left overnight in the booth for cool down. next day, unmasked, then to assembly. all moldings are cleaned and new adhesive applied, all glass reinstalled, doors re-assembled and when finished, vehicle goes for final detail interior and exterior. we will have anywhere from 110 to 130 hours labor easy in a complete. the paint carries a lifetime warranty. i use basf diamont.

Easy Glen. He was just giving his opinion. I had a Macco worker paint my truck at his house. It isn't perfect but it was reasonably priced. Iirc it was $1500 to fix doors, cab corners and a deer dent. He fixed all the tiny dents as well.

He actually said at the shop they try and talk people out of the way Glen spoke of. The way he talked they have different quality packages.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion. Mine is the less prep they do the poorer the job. Mask everything off and the paint will peel along that line, maybe not for a year or two but it will come off. I had a 92 GMC that had a small dent above the bumper. Took it to the GMC dealers body shop and it came back with swirl marks, which could have been removed, which there is no excuse for. They actually masked off a trim strip, I did not know that at the time but a couple of years later it began to peel. MAACO doesn't like to do that because it is more work. There is more to it than standing 6 feet away with a spray gun. I recently backed into a post with my 2005 GMC and did damage in the area behind the tire. I asked if the paint could be masked off in the factory crease between the "quarter panel" behind the wheel and the rest of the pickup box (the whole side has to be clearcoated). He said no because eventually the clear will peel at that point. Maaco may say otherwise, but they are wrong. That small repair including the rear bumper, which was barely damaged cost $1144, my share was $500, but it is perfect. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. In the case of tractors, the same thing goes, the more you remove, the more you prep the better the job.

I agree, you get what you pay for. I didn't want mine perfect, just not rusty. Its only been a 6 months so time will tell. Either shop told me I could plan on fixing it again in 5the years so I went the cheap route.

some of the sealers i keep on hand here at the shop are rm ep 589, rm dp 31 2k sealer and rm ds 30 2k sealer. ds 30 is a good adhesion promoter over virgin plastics, and is a good topcoat to minimize sanding scratches. this occurrs when a car has been repaired at another shop, and it is pushed thru and too many corners are cut. or if it is something a weekend warrior attempted and needs to get straightened out.
also our dp 25,26 27 2k powerfill primers can also be mixed as a wet-on wet (wow) sealers.
ep 359 is a low voc epoxy wow sealer
ep 589 is a chromated epoxy wow sealer, i have used this as a base primer on a farmall m that was sandblasted as the initial coat of material.
ep689 is a chromate free wow sealer
ep 789 is a black chromated primer that can also be a wow sealer. actual selection is based on individual prjects, and what material was previously applied. we are currently trying to correct previous attempts at a paint job on a 1936 buick for a customer. the gentleman is in his late "70s and has been working on the car. it has dulux enamel, nitrocellulose lacquer (duco), acrylic enamel (possibly centari), lacquer primer, and who knows what else. he is on a limited budget and we are fixing the areas that he messed with. we will end up base/clearing most of the car to get it in the ball park.

A few years back my brother had his Jeep painted at MACCO - I think it was about $500 for a single stage paint job. He pulled all the chrome and lights and did some sanding before it went to MACCO where they machine sanded it then painted it. 5 years later it still looks very good.

The Pontiac on the show "Moonshiners" has a 4 year old $400 black paint job from MACCO - the producers and Popular Hotrodding seem to think it looks pretty good.

Problem is you have too many shops that will charge $4000 and NOT pull all moldings, trim, glass, weatherstrips, bumpers, headlamps, and set back the bed to get to the rear of the cab.

Had some work done at Thurston Autobody in Emporia KS a few years back. We came to the agreement that since I wanted it done right I wouldn't bring anything to them again. I had seen some nice work come out that shop - I now wonder who did it.

Over the years, I have had MAACO paint five or six vehicles of mine. Every one of them looksed as good as a factory job, was resonable cost, and held up good. They have several price options depending on what you want. MAACO has also done minor body work on vehicles I have purchased and always did an excellent repair and match job for much less dollars than other quotes.
