paint for exhaust manifold

Don, It's been my experience that if it's a "show" tractor then the hi temp paints will probably hold up pretty good. If it's a working tractor then even the hi temp paint will not last very long. I have painted some on a couple of my tractors that are only ran at shows and they still look great after several years. I have a JD Model A with a manifold and pipe that has been ceramic coated and it looks like new even after plowing and working it pretty hard.

When you painted with the hi-temp paint, did you use a primer first? Also, what brand of paint did you use? Is the ceramic coat expensive?

I looked at the temperature ratings on some hi-temp paints and decided to try stove paint. Unfortunately it only comes in various shades of black or gray. I havn"t put it to work yet though.

No, I do not prime them, I am not aware of any Hi temp primer. I do treat the manifold with phosphoric acid before painting to "kill" any rust that may be hidden away in the pores of the casting. That seems to help a lot to keep the rust from coming back. I them paint them with JD black muffler paint.
Works for me.

If you don't care about original a product called "Cast Blast" works very well. Sandblast the manifold and then paint. See link below for phots and link to source for paint.

On the cast blast site it says the paint withstands temperatures up to 1200 degrees. You can find hi-temp paint at most any auto store that also claims to withstand temperatures to 1200 degrees. So, that begs the question, is the cast blast any better than these paints?

Here's my H with the dast blast. Holds up perfectly

Eastwood brand hi temp "Factory Grey" is made just for exhaust manifolds and works very well and does not burn off. Comes in pint can or aerosol. It does also come in satin black, silver or stainless steel. The factory grey looks most original like "cast iron"

check out oreilly auto parts. they have a hi temp primer thats good for up to 2000 degrees and then many different high temp colors to top coat with.

hi temp primer

I used the VHT paint like you linked to on our M. Used PPC Phix (Link Below) as a primer. Haven't looked up under the hood yet to see how it's holding up, I will the next time I am around the tractor and report back.

I will say one thing, I used the VHT black, and the paint is VERY thin, and there is not alot of pigment in it.

i used the orange on an AC WD manifold and i liked
how it turned out, but because of colder spots on
the manifold the paint didnt bake to the same color.
no rust after 6 months though.
