Iam sure this is a very easy answer and probably a stupid question but how do you make it move both directions. Its a compressed air sander built by CH. When i engage it so it moves 2 ways it makes the metal have a bunch of scratches on it. but when i work have it 1 direction the metal is nice and shiney and clean.
Should it be the one that looks all scratches(it does feel smooth)? or Should it be the clean looking one?

The letters "DA" stand for "dual action" . If you have one of the good ones like National Detroit , it will have a locking ring that locks the pad for grinding. If you push the ring to unlock then it will have an orbital action for feathering out paint chips or edges. Yes it will look like circular scratches. If you want to remove paint/rust etc , lock it in and use 80 grit , if you want to feather out an edge or chip so you cant detect it then unlock into orbital and use 80 first and then 220 and it's ready to primer. If you just want to rough up for paint adhesion on old paint then orbital and 320 or 400 grit. Use moderate rpm for feathering out. Too much speed won't do it correctly.
