paint removal

Can anyone tell me what to use to get powder coated paint of off wheels. Oven cleaner doesn't seem to work on powder coated rims. Wire brush doesn't seem to work very well either. Any help would be welcomed. Thanks Ed

High heat is normally used to remove powder coating. Some parts are not good candidates for that process. Media blasting works, but not very well. That is especially so if the part can't tolerate aggressive media. "Aircraft" paint stripper intended for catalyzed paints will soften powder coating if enough is applied and it's on the part long enough. However, it won't melt and dissolve powder coating as it does paint. After enough stripper you will be able to scrape the coating off. After removing all possible, let anything left dry, then blast the residual off with the coarsest most aggressive media the part will tolerate.

Sandblasting should work. I have never been around powder coating and see no reason to use it on tractors.

Scratch them in a few places and spray with water and leave them out doors in a shady place for two days and the coating will all flake off LOL.

You admit you have no experience with powder coating yet advise blasting to remove it. The reason powder coating is hard to remove by blasting is due to thickness and resiliency. It"s the same principal(only worse) that lets a thin layer or two of electrical protect a portion of a part being blasted. Although it CAN be removed by blasting, per what I already posted, some parts can"t stand being blasted that aggressively. And even where that"s an option, it doesn"t just disappear like paint does.

There are pros and cons to powder coating. It"s generally cheaper than doing a comparable job with premium paint and materials. There are different kinds of powder coat. The "regular" kind is polyester. It"s tough, but contrary to what some believe, it is not impervious to everything and it is not indestructible. Like paint, it is possible to chip, scratch, scuff, and dull. It is typically applied heavier than paint. In some situations that can cause problems. If doing show work, a more perfect finished can be attained with paint. Because powder coating is applied electrostatically, there is a tendency for extra material to build on edges, and parts with recesses can be very hard to fully and evenly coat. And per this discussion, it is hard to remove when that time comes. There are cases where it"s the best option. On the other hand, I see a lot of stuff powder coated that I would have painted.
