i have been using a high prime laquer primer for some time now and i like it it is sandable and it dries fast everybody tells me its 1960's tech though what are your thoughts thanks guys

It doesn't protect from rust very well. Other than that it works fine if you are going to topcoat it with lacquer paint. If you are going to put anything else over lacquer primer it won't stick. Lacquer works by re-wetting the layer below. If you are wanting a cheap primer for oil based paint use and oil based primer. If you are wanting automotive finishes than prime with epoxy primer. Most automotive finishes are tailored to go over epoxy. Automotive finishes have gotten complicated so be sure to stick to one product line and get a data sheet on everything you use. Some of it you have to wait after you mix it before you use it and some of it has a time limit (recoat window) where you have to topcoat it or reprime it.

If what you are calling lacquer primer is something like PPG Omni 181 primer/surfacer, you should put it over epoxy primer as it does not adhere to bare metal very well. One other disadvantage is that it can shrink before or after the topcoat is applied revealing defects such as scratches. A better product is a urethane surfacer such as PPG Omni 182, but it uses hardener for which you should use supplied air to protect your lungs. It also needs to be applied over epoxy primer. The epoxy is another expense and another step, but epoxy is a very easy primer to apply and can be topcoated or coated with another primer in 30 minutes after application (at 70 degrees)
