Do I need to buy all my paint at the same time?

I am restoring a "53 Chevy pickup. I think that 2 gallons will be enough for the main body color. However, I am only ready to paint the bed and some odds and ends now. I hate spending the money on paint that is going to sit for a year, but I am afraid that if I wait a year and then order another gallon, the cab and front end will be a little bit different shade. Any advice on this?

If you are putting the truck back to the original color you won't have a problem buying the paint on two occasions. If you are going to paint the truck with some of the colors on some of these newer vehicles with three stage paints, I would purchase the paint at one time.

I am painting the truck the orignal color (Seacrest Green), and using single stage urethane.

personally, i would buy it all at the same time. you will avoid any variances in the colors from a later mix formula. small variations occur with scale readings, base mix colors, tint colors ect, which can cause a color shift in a later formula. keep the second gallon in the basement or anywhere to protect it from freezing.

if your local paint jobber is good they can mix the paint to the 10th of a gram per tint so there would be no variation visible to the naked eye. however, weather conditions ( temp, humidity) and spraying techniques can also cause different colors out of the same can. i would buy what you need now and then buy what you need later due to the settling in the can over the course of the year. you should have no noticible color variations if the mix and weather conditions are similar

Unless you know , personally,the man /woman doing the mixing and are sure they will still be working there when you need more , I would get it ALL at once. I don't care what hi tech equipment they have for mixing , ya can't fix "stupid" and trust me the auto stores now-a-days have their share of it. Some change help like Mc Donalds. How careful do you think a guy that hasn't had a raise in a year and is leaving in a week anyway is going to be? I've seen it happen! Same guy that's gonna spit in your pizza before he delivers it.

Only if you want it to match.

It is supposed to match, but there will be minute differences between one batch and another.

I have a '49 GMC and plan on buying all mine at the same time. This way no variations in color but what I do when applying it.

My challenge now is figuring out what color scheme to use - historic colors or two tone or some flashy color I wont get sick of in 2 yrs.

Would love to see some pics of your rig.
