Runs In Paint

I painted the sheet metal on my neighbors D14 Allis Chalmers today and got runs in some of the peices. How long do I need to wait to sand out the runs and buff? What rubbing compound do yall use?
Most of the time I just repaint the item but I don"t have time for that, its gotta be ready for a show fairly soon.

Its painted with Valspar paint with hardener. Thanks for any help.

On my Motor home I"ve got several small paint rollovers low down along the wheel well. I used Acrylic Enamel,no hardener, paint is 3 months old and still not dry down deep. I figure maybe next spring I may be able to scrape the runs down with a razor blade and sand and repaint. This is Acrylic Enamel.

Need to know paint type, not brand, in order to advise. I doubt you can remove large sags then polish from a oil alkyd. At least invisably.

I used the valspar tractor paint, not the restoration series. It has been in a tin roof barn closed up(about 115 degrees) with a fan on since yesterday. Went and checked it today and could press on it hard with my finger and left no mark. Having the hardener in it makes a big difference. I see no probems with starting to sand everything again Monday and reshoot it all.

Some advice from an old car refinisher: You will never make it look right! By the time you get it sanded down flat, it will need redone! There is no way i ever discovered that would let ya just sand the "run" and not the surrounding paint!
Here's something to try:
Mask off above the run, sand it flat, reprime with not too wet primer, allow to dry well, sand to finish, paint the taped off area. When thoroughly dry, peel off the masking, and with stripe tape, go aound the body with the different color stripe , following the tape line. This after you have repainted the area. Of course, you will have to stripe the other side, Although, nobody can see both sides at the same time.
If you don't want to do the whole side, sometimes a light application of thinned color can be used to blend in the new paint, such as over a wheel opening, or such. A mist coat at the outer edge. I always tried to paint to a seam, or a joint, where i could paint right to the joint.Bet ya learned something, though! Its not as easy as it looks!!
