body filler on fenders

hi--i will be body filling some fenders. they have about a 3" wide strip across them,rusted thru. should i tack weld some sheet metal on the back side? (permanent or temporary?) the last set didnt turn out so well....i didnt put anything on the backside. thanks for suggestions.

to do it right, cut out all the rusted thru areas till you get good metal. then weld a patch in , metal finish the welds and apply body filler. if you fill over the rust, it will come right back thru.

Actually you would weld it into where you cut the old rusty stuff out. Basically you are putting a "plug" in the hole that you made.

cut the rust out.. weld int he patch and grind down.. just the filler to blend if needed.

Glennster, if I have flat top fenders and one of them has some spider cracks and a small hole where maybe a bolt was at one time. Should I just weld up the cracks, or cut out the spot and weld in a patch?
