how to keep grill screen holes from plugging

when painting grill screens, such as on numbered series John Deere two cylinders, how do you keep the very small holes from plugging with paint?

Thin the paint down like water and dust on in light coats just enough to cover primer. They were originally designed to have paint on them so am sure the calculated sq. in. area allowed for sufficient cooling. You probably won't have any more than 2 mils (2 1000ths of an inch) and that aint gonna impede any air flow.

If the tractor has been repainted a couple times, the small holes get smaller each time. I find the best solution is to simply get all the paint off the screens before repainting them. For me what has worked best is to get the paint off using electrolysis. Then the little openings will remain open as the paint is put on. If you are not familiar with paint removal using electrolysis, then a search on this site should provide some explanations. I will include a link to a site that covers it. Look under restoration tips.
