What does a good professional paint job cost these days? Thinking about getting my "97 pickup repainted. I talked to one shop and they wanted $3000 just for paint, minimal body work.

Is that reasonable?

Sounds pretty much inline. I am working on an old cab to a stakebed and it has minor body work and they wanted $7K to fix the cab and paint. Took me all of about 3 days to fix the dents and I am by no means a professional or spent 8 hrs a day working on it either.

Not reasonable, but not totally out of line either.Depending on the type of paint used, the color, reds and metallics cost more, and the condition of the truck as far as preparation, you can have $1000.00 or more in materials alone. If the guy has a state of the art paint booth,50 grand easy.Nothing is cheap anymore.

I had an estimate done a year or so ago to repaint JUST the 12" or so stripe down the side of my 2 tone(I hate the current color) crewcab longbed pickup. $3200. Granted it is the best body shop in town, if you get in a wreck, take your rig there, it'll be better than before the crash. but still alot of money. He gave me the detailed estimate. I could save myself about $600 be Doing all the "remove" part of the R&R ie; bumpers, headlights, tailights etc. Just the material for the bumper strip along the side of the truck was another $800. So really, it was not totally out of line.

But. Still, have the lousey old color.

The end figure is a direct indicator of your requirements. Earl Sheib probably still does a "paint job" for $500 - $600. Obviously fills someones requirements or wouldn't be in bussiness. He can't read your mind so unless you were honest with him concerning your requirements then he has to assume you want their best and that's probably what he priced you. It's all about honest communication! Anything less and someone will end up in court,

I'm asked for a firm price over the phone all the time. The goofs usually lying about what it is. My esti. is "worst case scenario". Offer to pay per hour then do everything you can yourself.

for a full size standard cab, it would run anywhere from 4-6 thousand at my shop for a factory finish. everything needs to come off, all trim , moldings, glass, doors disassembles, bumpers removed, all the dings repaired, blocked and primed twice, then shot in diamont base clear. very spendy, very labor intensive.

I think body and paint work is a classic example of; "you get what you pay for". There are still some scammers out there though that charge a lot to do horrible work. Go to a reputable body shop and ask for references and look at some of their work. Look at some of Glennster's pictures to get a good idea of what a professional job should look like. It's not uncommon for a custom paint job to cost $7000 and up. Just to replace a darn plastic bumper can cost over $600. BTDT. Dave
