Painting a muffler

I need to put a new muffler on my tractor. Although it is painted up I still use it, it seems the aluminized coating they put on them burns off pretty quick when I am working it. Would aluminum colored header paint keep it looking silver longer?

I Use RUSTOLEUM Flat black HI-TEMP with exceptional results, Does NOT Burn Off,I'm sure the Aluminum would be just as Long lasting.Larry

Yep. Why not spend 6 bucks and try it. Looking forward to a report on what worked well.

I've got a can of paint I bought from an ACE HARDWARE that is silver and high temp. It states that it [u:afb7fbcdbf]Requires[/u:afb7fbcdbf] heat to fully cure... I have not used it yet, but I may this week. My "new" muffler looks ruff due to the mfg's paint burning off.

My big holdback was that if the coating burned off under the paint it might fall off in some places but stay in others where it is cooler and might look worse than if I did nothing at all.

I thought the same thing. I have had my muffler about a year. I ran it hard and baled about 400 round bales this summer, I hope all the "hot spots" have burned off by now. I plan to sand it smooth and paint. By the way the paint I bought is an aerosol. I'll take a pic of it tomorrow.

Make sure you ge t the vibra sander out, stick on a new 80 grit disc, and get it shint smooth, all the rust off first. Then an application of metal prep, the PPG DX stuff. Give your paint something to stick to. It won't adhere to a living moving mass of iron oxide (rust).
