Soda Blasting???

Has anyone used or had success with soda blasting? It appears to be effective, safe for your health, and environment friendly (green)... I am intrested in your pros and cons. I am contemplating on purchasing one in the near future to clean up my Farmall 504 before prime and paint. I know that sand blasting assembled compontents can cause gasket failures and sand intrusion. Soda is biodegradable.

Thoughts?

we send stuff out from the shop to have it soda blasted. not as aggresive as sand, bio-degradable, it does not remove rust, it will cut thru paint and primer down to metal. it also will not warp metal like an aggresive media does. we recently had a 1971 javelin blasted with ground walnut shell media. that came out real nice too.
 
Just to add to glennster's comments, as can be seen by the cost of the media, it is more expensive than sand. I don't know how far 50lbs of soda will go, but I suspect not that far unless you have a means of reclaiming it. What's your experience glennster?
 
gordo, i'm kinda gettin the impression that the javelin wasnt high on yer list of favorite cars!!
this one should be a nie ride when we are done, 360 cu motor, 4 speed, its getting a 9 inch ford rear end built right now, 4 wheel disc, motor is at the engine shop all done, getiin about 450 hp. its not my car, its what the customer wants.
 
Glennster, I get the impression you build custom cars... Sounds like a paid hobby, not a job! I appriciate the info on the soda blaster. HF has 50 lb bags for $30. Is this a good price? Also ya'll mentioned the coverage is less than sand or other media. Walnut shells sound attractive, but I have not researched the price on those. I know HF sells then in 12 and 24 grit. I am still open to more alterantives to prep other than sand (bad stuff).

charles, i own a body shop. along with collision work, we do some restorations, and we work with a race car chassis shop and a custom engine builder also on drag cars. and we do a tractor now and then in the shop. we have two blasters in or area, one does blasting and powdercoating, the other does strictly restoration car blasting. for small quantities of the media, hf would be good. but to get a price break, you need bigger quantities. shipping is a killer because of the weight involved. we have a cabinet blaster at our shop made by scat blast. real nice cabinet and has a vac system. the media we are using in it right now is a fine ground automotive winshield glass. works real good. the aluminum oxide media is also a good aggresive media. if you are looking for a cabinet, this one is nice,they truck ship right to you, get the carbide tip upgrade, along with the foot pedal. here is a link

its a good idea to try and reclaim the media and reuse it till it wont cut anymore. you can build an inexpensive blast booth with some 2x2's and either blue tarps or visqueen plastic, then sweep up and screen the media to reuse. most medias work best when blasting at 60 to 80 psi air pressure. higher pressure will destroy the media real quick and it wont cut anymore.
 
were did you find the repair panels.Owned dozens of the Javelins and amx's.all i have now are a couple of gremlins and an 82 concorde wagon.
 
kennedy american is a good supplier of high quality aftermarket and nos parts. we have been getting some off e bay also. tough and expensive to find parts for this rascal. picked up a brand new nos amc backup lamp lens in the original box recently , paid 300.00 for it whew!!!! here is a link to kennedy. great people to do business with too!!

racer buddy of mine in the mid 1970's ran a gremlin x, i think it was a 1972, 401 cu, 4 speed, dana with a 4:11, m+h street slicks screwed down. car was god awful fast, ran 12's. he made a lot of $$$ street racing with that ride!!! purple with white stripes.
 
Glennster, thanks for the info on the blaster. I recently bought a HF siphon feed blast cabinet. For my hobby uses it is working ok, except that I need more air. I am about to build a 5HP tandem compressor (two 5HP motors and two pumps) on a propane tank (150-250 gallon). This should make do for my light blasting needs. I'll post pics when done. I hope it will run my pressure pot.

I am going to start with one motor and pump then add the 2nd one later. I am going to use a time delay relay to delay the 2nd motor about 20 seconds after the first. I am doing a tandem because I do not have 3 phase. My Dad has 3 phase and has a 25 HP unit on a 120 gallon tank, it is a beast!

Soda dose work well for tractors the soda disolves with water and will not damage your parts it will not hirt chrome or glass we use a water att. whitch keeps the dust down and soda when mixed with water and greese turns to soap help degreese and removes oily residue we have a small soda blaster looks like a small sand blaster but it uses ALOT of air you will need a very large compressor. The soda will etch the original paint if you dont feel the need to completly strip the tractor and helps in adhesion power wash the tractor spray with flash bond bonding clear and paint works very well but a soda blaster is a pretty large investment for 1 tractor hop this help and good luck
