Hello all, Wondering what the best kinda paint gun setup you guys recomend; Im a beginner but willing to learn ,Any ideas??

like any tool, you can go from inexpensive to extravagant. top of the line sata hvlp will set you back 600 easy. here is a decent starter set, paint gun, primer gun and touch up gun for under a hundred. i picked up a set of these for a bang around set and they work pretty good.

You got to decide type.. .. IE.. pressure gun, HVLP, or syphon.

I really like a syphon gun.. though have used all 3 and own all 3... Cheap ones from china store.. etc.

Works good enough to paint tractors .. etc. Air supply is almost more important than gun type..

In 50+years of auto body work and painting, i never used a high-priced spray gun! I bought those $40 ones at the flea markets, and got good results with them.
I refinished a 1940 Ford coupe, black in color, and many others, at the shop, using a $40 spray gun, the suction type, and it turned out better than factory finish!
And when Base coat/ Clear coat finishes came out, did i try those new types?? Nope, just used my $40 spray guns, and got great results! Best thing about them--nobody would steal them!

doug heres a couple pics of my shop guns, first are the hvlp's, 2 satas on the left, inexpensve astro on the right. 2nd picture are the siphon guns, left devilbiss jga 504, then a binks and a sharp. with the gravity feed hvlp guns you use a lot less material than with a siphon gun, which is real important considering the price of paint and materials. also an hvlp gun will use all the paint in the gun unlike a siphon gun taht leaves some in the bottom of the cup. also a lot less overspray with the hvlp. i learned to paint with the siphon guns, but now i use the hvlps.

There"s as many arguements FOR high priced/high quality guns as there is arguements for NOT spending the money. All things being equal, I"d rather invest PART of my money in EXPERIENCE.

I have 2 "HUSKEE" HVLP guns (Home Depot) that sell for less than $75. And I have a Sharpe HVLP gun I bought off of Craigslist. Seller told me it retailed around $300. And to be perfectly honest, I can"t tell the difference in the quality of work produced between the 2 types. Where the difference comes from is in the number of paint jobs I"ve done. I"d LIKE to say each one gets better, but that"s not ALWAYS the case. After each major screw-up, I"ve learned a little and the game USUALLY goes to the next level.

So. My advice (worth every bit of what you"ll be paying for it) is to buy a decent mid range ("better" cheap gun, to low end model from high end manufacturer) and spend as much time "playing" with the gun and learning the ins and outs of spraying paint.

I have 2 Harbor Freight Professional guns... One a siphon unit with a 2qt pot and 6 ft hoses to the gun, the other is a gravity gun. The gravity gun is my favorite!

I have been using HVLP guns for quite a while now and they work much better than any siphon gun for many reasons and you can get a decent cheap one for around $50 and honestly they aren't all that bad compared to my DiVillbiss guns that I payed around $300 each for.
Sure I notice a difference but you can still get a quality paint job out of a cheap one
