Versatile 256

Anybody know anything about these? More specifically reliability and parts availability?

I need a new tractor for hay season, and realize that the turning radius will be a limiting factor, but could use something with 4wd for a lot of grading and field restoration.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know anything about the real ones, but I have a 1/32 scale model of a 256. Been trying to sell it on ebay but no luck.. If you get one, I'd be glad to ship this toy to you if you'll pay the shipping cost. My e-mail is open.

Versatile Bi-directional are a handy unit. Very well made here in Canada. Very popular in
the 80's but now alot are houred out.

The Versatile Bi-Directionals are excellent tractors. The 256 has the 3.9L Cummins engine, so very reliable. Not the nicest machines to use with pull-type PTO powered equipment, but they get the job done. Really maneuverable as a loader tractor. I think parts availability is pretty good, but it's been a few years since I worked on them.

There are three main things to look at and keep an eye on. First is the articulation pins. When they wear out, they usually require machining and bushings to be inserted. Second is the pivots on the engine end axle. Same as the articulation pins, usually requires machining and bushings. Third is checking the fluid levels in the dropboxes at the end of the axles, and checking to make sure they're still straight. If somebody got a little rambunctious with the loader, it' possible to bend the dropboxes at the axle housing.

Hope that helps!
