255 Leyland PTO doesn't work. Its not the last one that you hook up driveshafts to. Its the next section in the transmission more. Are those hard to take apart. How long would this take to fix, is it very complicated?

Never worked on a 255, but the older tractors i have worked on, problem will likely be in one of 3 places, the PTO clutch, the dog coupling behind the clutch or the splined shaft that the PTO selector works on. Clutch and dog coupler can be worked on from the bell housing, splined shaft requires the PTO and hydraulic unit to be removed from the main transmission casting, it's not a big job, but it is heavy.

Having re read your original post, see if the PTO lever can go more rearwards by removing the little bracket that it sits in, sometimes the splines get worn and allowing the selector shaft to move more rearwards allows the shaft to get a better grip on the splines...
If that doesn't help then remove the rear PTO hydraulic casting, first drain the oil, should be approx 12 gallons in there, the remove the rear casting by unbolting from the main transmission casting, you will need something to hold it, an engine crane works fine, then pull the unit off the tractor, the shaft for the PTO come off with the rear casting and can then easily be checked.
