Timing Rock Island F 18-35

I know NOTHING of that tractor, but I ASSUME it has a magneto???

If so, mag impulse should trip AT or a tiny bit after TDC, NEVER before (think KICKBACK).

If NO marks can be found, it should be possible to easily find TDC using a drinking straw or soft copper wire (SOFT stuff so as not to risk bore or piston damage) inserted though the #1 sparkplug port.

With the mag shorted out to avoid any chance of a kickback or unintentional start, slowly crank engine 'til the straw or wire rises to it's highest point, along within the valves for that cylinder being closed.

Then, make your own TDC marks on the flywheel front pulley, whatever works, for future reference.

If such a case that there's no clear path to get a straw or wire down to the piston, a simple plastic tube with water in it (think MANOMETER) connected to the sparkplug port can be used to find TDC.

Timing mark s on flywheel. Have to access from top. Marks coincide with arrows. DC 1,4 tdc 1 and 4. Ex c exhaust closing and IN 0 intake open. Remove plug #1. Turn to compression stroke until DC 1/4 is directly under indicating arrow. Turn motor 1 7/8 past tdc. Mag rotor should be in #1 position. Spark lever in fully retarded position, rotate mag until points just start to open. Tighten up mag coupling.
