Deutz D4006 won't start.

I just bought a Deutz D4006, 35 engine Hp. It runs great, has power steering, 2 stage clutch and good 3 pt. hitch and good brakes. But it has to be pulled to crank it, and it doesn't roll 10 feet before it cranks. I even put a new 1000 cranking amp battery on it but it still turns over too slow to get enough compression to crank it. The previous owner said he put a new solinoid on the starter, but wasn't certain if it was the right one. Could that be the whole problem or do these tractors have a compression release or something. I've never owned one.

If the starter won't turn fast enough to start it, that has nothing to do with the solenoid. If you have to pull start it, that's just poor compression. This is not your typical engine, taking the heads off requires near professional level skills, there are different thickness of firing rings between the head and jug & jug and block. I've spent big money on mine to be rebuilt, I've never had it too far apart myself. I wouldn't take it apart either, unless you feel good about it. We used to warm up the intake manifold with a torch, or just take out the air filter and put the torch in it, a breath of hot air they will start much easier. Never put ether in it, it will stretch the head bolts, all kind of trouble. Good luck.

In Europe, those engines would have the reputation to be easily redone. You just have to check carefully the distance between the head and the piston. Some people use to change heads and pistons basically with the engine still on a combine, with all the dust and everything. Yes a book would be required.
They would probably use a Thermostart like the one of a Perkins engine. It cost nothing to install and is not as harmfull as ether. Also more convenient since you do not have to carry ether.
