Long 360 Shifter stuck

I have an old Long 360. The shift is stuck. Any
idea how to get it going? Any help would be a
blessing. Thanks

Hi Billyrex,

Can't speak specifically for the Long, but stuck shifters are fairly common with old tractors. Happened with my SA, and my MF.

Generally, the bottom end of the shifter is a "blade", sort of like a slice from the middle of a marble. With age, the pivot pins going through the shift rod get worn, allowing the blade to wear to more of a point, and it will then slip between the shift fork notches, locking it in one gear, or sometimes even two. The short term solution is to pull the shift cover, reallign the shift fork notches to allow the shift lever to work, put all the sliding gears in neutral, then putting the cover back on with a bead of silicone as a gasket.

The long term fix is to replace the pivot pins (about $30), put some weld on the bottom 'blade' of the shifter and grinding it back to a fascimile of it's original shape to fit the shift fork notches. While you're at it, if the shifter has a rubber boot on it, replace that as well, and check the oil for water or other contaminants (like 'gear dust'), and change it if needed.

Hope that helps.

I have had a 445 for over 30 years and sometimes it gets hung up too. Pull the cover and line up the right and left shifting rails with the center one (I use a screwdriver), then put the cover back with the stick in the center slot on the center rail. that is the neutral position between high and low range. I usually only put a couple of bolts on the cover and check to see if everything feels right before I tighten the cover.

It was explained to me that the end of the shifter wears down enough to allow the shifter to slide in between rail positions thus putting it in a bind. A common fix is to build up the end of the shifter with a welder. I did that to mine many years ago and it lasted awhile.

My experience has been that people not used to a Long and the way it shifts have trouble learning the tractor. It is a bit clumsy, but I have no regrets with it, and actually have two of them, one being a 360.

Thanks for the help!! I got it going. I haven't had time to look at it until today, but it only took about 30 minutes. Easy fix. Just have to be a little more careful. Thanks again
