Found a hit and miss engine

I was walking around through a place that my great-grandfather used to dump old farm equipment at, and found a hit and miss engine. It's completely rusted, as it's probably been there for sixty years or more. As best I can tell, it's brand is called Economy. I don't know much about it, as I'm a deere person... The serial number plate is damaged, so I can't really tell anything about it. There doesn't appear to be much as far as casting numbers, either. Any help on the identification would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kyle

Doesn't look like it likes my images... I might have to add them externally somewhere and link them.

Update--nevermind, had to shrink them down first.

Built by Hercules. Sold by sears.A lot of parts are available.Measure the diameter of the flywheels and the bore of the engine if you can. We help you better with the size then.

Thanks! I will do that! I'll go and pick it up with the tractor tomorrow. Or today if I can... Any idea on what year(s) the model E was produced from?

As far as I can tell, from end to end on the flywheel is 18 inches.

Great find!! Its an Economy hit miss for sure. Judging by the size probably a 1 an half horse or a 1-3/4. Im surprised its all complete other then the tag. Like someone else said there are a lot of parts out there for these engines. As long as this one aint stuck too hard you could get it going again

Thanks! The only thing left on the tag (I think you can see it if you look closely) is the 1/2. So, I'm guessing it's a 1 1/2.

I haven't gotten the piston freed yet, but I'm working on it. It will take time, I'm sure. The one valve was completely gone, and the cylinder was full of rust mud (from the valve, I'm sure). The cylinder walls look just fine, as does the top of the piston. I have it with the piston pointing up, and I keep putting penetrating oil in it. I dump it out every now and then, which is very rusty, and pour in some new. It will probably take a while, but I'm hoping that eventually it'll work its way down far enough to let it start to free up. Time will tell... Everything else is rusted pretty tight. It took a long time to get to the way it is, I'm sure it'll take a while to get it back, too...

Thanks!

If you have it up and the piston is down in the bore fill it with diesel and light it up. As the heat expands the cylinder wall the diesel creeps down . I've done many tractors this way and works pretty good and lot less labor.

That's a good idea. I'll have to give it a try. Makes sense.
