Trying to find Model and Year of our old Wards!

My boyfriends grandfather bought an old Wards years and years ago from a yard, two years ago my boyfriend pulled it out, spent some time and got it running for the local old engine show. Its back this year, and we are still getting asked if we found out what it is. No one can help us. Its a HUGE show, and there's not one tractor remotely like it there. We can't find the serial number, not for lack of trying. If anyone knows where its located, or where we can find some more information on the antique Wards', we'd certainly appreciate it! I can post pictures of it tomorrow.

You will have to be more specific than that.
Wards put their name on several tractors in the past.
A picture would clear up the mystery mucha quick
Are you talking about a farm tractor or a garden tractor? It makes a big difference.

Its a farm tractor. We dropped it at the show grounds last night, today is the first day of the show, when we get up there I will post photos. He said its a row crop.

Found some numbers while taking photos. Google wasn't a help with them though. :/ I'm not sure how to add the photos[/img]

Does it look like this Wards tractor? Hal

Not at all. Except for the red. ;) we figured it out. Its a 1950 HR. Thanks to Ron above who listed his number.

At a tractor show today I noticed Wards and Custom tractors were displayed together. Are they from the same manufacturer and is the Wards short for Montgomery Wards?

I believe it is short for Montgomery Wards, but they may be before they joined up. Not sure on the customs. The one we have is just a catalog order one.

This came from the catalog, but has a plate on it where it was manufactured at and by whom. Was still sold from their catalog.

Hi ropingirl21, while its true that Montgomery Wards never built any of the products they sold likewise for Sears, they did contract with different manufactures to build products with their name on it so your tractor is a M Wards tractor, built for them by some mfg. doesn't means it not a M Wards.
GB in MN

The plate on it just says Wards. I tried to post photos of it but they would not attach after uploading. I believe the M Wards, they just didn't put the M on the tractor itself. Then on a tiny little plate on the right hand side, down on the frame rail by the bell housing, it states it was manufactured by LOWTHER in Joliet, Illinois.

you have a wards tractor built by lowther..it is basically a custom with wards badges..that company started out building lehr big boys with industrial; Chrysler flathead sixes and 5spd trans with 2 ton truck rearend cut down with wheels bolted on to it..later they built customs with Timken final drives added to the rearend and fluid drive converters added in the transmission as well..harry lowther bought the company out and that's why the tag you mentioned is on there he owned the company when they built for wards..he bankrupted the company and that was the end of that..the serial number should be on top of the frame rail by the hand brake..there used to be a custom club and at one time I had a contact number but that was all lost during a move..hope this helps

Thank you for a better history on the manufacturing. Looking forward to sharing all this info with the people who ask about it at next years show!

Thank you! Unfortunately my phone factory reset when it had a drink spilled on it by a dogs tail... I will take more pictures tomorrow and try again!
