long 460 information needed

My son picked up a Long 460 with a bad knock but everthing seams to work, just knocks loudly. He said the guy that brought it in said he ran it low of oil and it started knocking. My son said it is comming from the bottom in (maybe only spun a bearing)I was wondering what would be the best manual to get to work on this tractor with, where is a good place to get parts, I have a ford 640 and this board has been very helpful in fixing problems I have had with it. THANKS IN ADVANCE

Unless he got it for nearly nothing, you will have more in rebuilding the engine than the tractor is worth. Parts are scarace, expensive and the tractors have very little resale value when completed. Long is a very unpopular tractor in my neck of the woods. We had 2 or 3 dealers around that sold a lot of them and now they are gone, no parts and no service and no one will work on them. Good Luck.

It may be easier to install a Detroit diesel, Cat or Cummins. The military has used all three. This vehicle has a 1600hp EMD diesel only turns at 900 rpm. Tug boats used that engine too. I went to Tulsa OK to a company well known as Unit Rig in 1978 on this engine. They built 100 and 200 ton dump trucks and used this engine in some of them. Hal

Believe your son's tractor shares much of the same parts with other Fiat designed tractors such as Allis Chalmers 5040, Oliver/Cockshut and Hesston. I've owned a 5040 for almost 15 years and, other than the starter, has been an excellent chore tractor.

If the engine is trashed I would look for a running engine in a salvage yard. Long 350,360,445,460,510,AC5040, and some Oliver will drop right in.

I have no idea what kind of manuals Long provided. I would check out an Oliver shop manual for like a 1255 tractor. That Long is a 3 cylinder correct. Also check into a manual for the 3 cylinder Fiat that A-C sold. Have you talked to Rick Stairs in Ohio? He is very good for parts for the Oliver/Fiat tractors. Just remember there are some differences between your tractor and the Oliver version. The Long and the A-C were built under a license agreement with Fiat. More questions/ Those tractors as an Oliver are tough as nails so to speak. J.

As rrlund said get in touch with Import Tractor
as the Fiat engines like the 460 has are the least expensive engines to work on I know of these days.Or as others have said just look for a parts Fiat built tractor.Don't even think about putting another brand engine in that tractor as it'd be a nightmare because of the hooks ups.The thrust may be the all you need to replace on the engine BTW
