What ever you do don't put salt water in it! That has to be the worst thing I ever herd of to seal a crack and it will only cause other problems in the end.
What I have done several time in the past is to drill the block just past the end of the crack on each end and tape it to a 1/4x 20 thread. Take a cut off wheel and cut down into the crack about 1/8" deep the length of the crack. I have used Harris Products SIB mig wire to weld the crack up. I found it best to have the engine out of the tractor and laying on its side for the best performance of the weld. After grinding the crack down take a wire wheel on a drill and clean the crack and block near the crack. Apply heat from a torch to get rid of any oil build up and to pre heat the block and re wire wheel it as soon as you are done heating to get rid of anything there so you have a clean surface to weld on. The SIB (bronze silica wire) will weld like regular steel wire and while it is in liquid form will go deep into the crack(that's why you need it on its side to let gravity help you) to make a good seal as well as the bead on top. Just some of the things you learn along the way to being an old fart! Bandit
