Does anyone know what the color of a 1938 Sears Economy tractor was. Iam painting mine this summer and I want to do it right. I think they were red but what color red and if the wheels were different or not. Thanks for any info it is appricated.

Henry

They were all red. Wheels included. Use a red as close to IH red as you can. Paint at that time was bought from different suppliers, so the red the factory used didn't always match. Good Luck!

Here's a PPG paint code 71310 for IH red. I painted my Troy Bilt tiller with the same paint code in 2006. Hal

Hello Henry, Nice to hear you have a Sears Economy! Do you know Dave and Chad Elmore? They are Sears Economy gurus and have had over a dozen Sears Economys over the years. They have extensively reasearch the company and it"s history along with interviewing some of the factory"s workers while they were still alive. They had had original paint matched and had arrived at Ditzler (PPG) 1960 Chevrolet roman red, paint code DDL 70961. The whole tractor is supposed to be red. That paint code above is a red that is a slightly orangey red I guess you might say. The Elmores have reproduced the original decals for the Economy and have them for sale. They also have an extinsive registy going of surviving Sears Economys. I believe they are up to 80-90 still surviving out of the 500 built in 1938-39. What"s the serial number on yours? I am the editor of the Graham Bradley and Sears Sold Farm Tractors Newsletter and if you would like to be on the mailing list please let me know. We also have a national show once a year too, we would love to have you apart of it!

Mr Fred
Thank you for the info. I will contact Mr Elmore. I think I have his phone as I met a Mr John Baum last year at Rantool Il he had Economy Tractors and he gave me the number. He also gave me your E mail I tired to contact you once but it did not go through. We got the tractor last year and it had 2 stuck valves from sitting we got them freed up and did some other minor repairs and she seems to run fairly well now. The SN you asked for is #1025. I have some questions and would like to talk with others about Economy tractors

Henry,

Glad to hear you got it back up and running! I believe the Elmores have known about your tractor being in exsistance and already have it on their registry from the previous owner, as I remember them saying that I think that your tractor is the earliest serial numbered Economy known of at this moment. Yes John is a great guy and has developed quite a large collection of Economy tractors himself. He is a regular attender of our national show each year. Be sure and give Dave Elmore a call, he should have no problem answering any of your questions and he could give you my contact info so you could be on the newsletter mailing list if you want.
