It seems like every so often I hear of someones old Oliver dealer and I wish someone could record them so others can know who used to serve them. Its also neat when you find one thats still open. I guess where I am going is if anyone wants to say who served their "Oliver needs" list them, especially if they are still open. To find a good old dealer around is getting harder to find. Thanks to any that reply, j meyer

Our old Oliver dealership is Dosdall Implement, rr Red Wing, MN. They are still open as well:)

Justin Schaefer Inc. - Portland,IN

Besecker Oliver Sales - Greenville, OH

Justin Schaefer sold MF, NH, NI, and Ol, he is still alive. Probably went out of business in early 1970's. Besecker's went out early 1970's.

Patty Implement later became Schultz Agri-Equipment, Pleasant Hill, Ohio went out approx. 1994.

Goodnight Implement -Muncie, IN

Merkamp Sales & Service - Richmond, IN

I want to hear about Trulock's, Assumption, IL. I have old ads from them, seemed to sell almost everything from Ollies to tarps to corn cribs, rubber boots to wood stoves. Seemed like an enormous dealer back in the '60s.

Hi,

Wow! What a response! I recently had a book published on tractor dealerships--American Farm Tractor & Implement Dealerships--in which I collected many stories and pictures of dealers of all makes both past and present. As a result of that, I have already started a Dealership Registry (to go along with The Tractor Registry that I started several years back). Here's a brief description of both:

The Dealership Registry is a compilation of information, photos, stories, etc relating to ANY tractor and implement dealerships, past or present, no matter where they were, how long they were open, etc. I'm interested in simple information as well as the more detailed info. For instance, if you just know the name of a dealership, its location, and what it sold, that's okay. But dates of operation are wonderful to know, names of owners and even employees for that matter, and ANY stories about the dealership are VERY welcome, too! Eventually, I hope to publish this info on the net in an organized fashion so everyone can enjoy it and this part of our history can eb preserved.

The Tractor Registry is older than the Dealership Registry, but it covers all brands of tractors made 1970 and prior. This project actually started up as just a registry for Model "R" Minneapolis-Moline tractors back in 1994, then a few years later it became The M-M Registry. M-Ms have been my focus for the past several years, but I'm slowly starting to promote the all-brand aspect of the registry even more now. (I work full-time and have a very busy schedule, so sometimes I don't get to spend as much time with fun tractor things like I'd like to. I just got PART of The M-M Registry posted online, but more of it is forthcoming, Lord willing. I'm a school teacher, plus I write books on old tractors on the side, so hopefully I will have more time to get everything else up and running this coming summer.)

If any of you all have any information to send me on this, or photos to e-mail or send me, that would be awesome! Just drop me an e-mail and we'll get to exchanging information. Thanks!

Respectfully,

Brian Rukes

Tesch Implement in Seymour. About a good 1/2 hr drive, but worth it. Parts lady really knows her stuff!! Our 1600 & 565 plow were bought new from the Greenville Coop, probably as well as the 70 and 77 that are long since gone. They are still in business, but no longer sell or service tractors/ implements. Tesch is now selling MF, another good brand. They service anything and everything, not just what they sold.

We had Cox Implement in Monticello, IA. They sold Oliver and White up until the mid 80s. There are still quite a few olivers and whites around with their sales tags on them. My uncle has a late 770 that came from there and my late grandpa bought a brand new 2-70 and they got a slightly used 79 2-105 from them. They had lots of buildings on the property for under roof storage. The main building and sales office is now a Pizza Ranch restauraunt. There are now 2 dealers about 20 to 30 miles away that we can get parts through due to basically the AGCO company umbrella.

Here we have Lake Henry Implement, still open, selling new and used tractors. Located in Lake Henry MN, a town of only about 90 people, the dealer does well though. Mostly sell new AGCO and Masseys, but always have some Olivers on the lot. I know they have been selling Olivers since the late 50's, probably earlier, but not sure. They provide good service, and can usually supply me w/ any Oliver part I need.

third party image

My Google Alert that is always sniffing around for "frank rymon" found, to my surprise, Tim's post mentioning my brother's dealership in Washington NJ.

My grandfather started the business around 1937 or so and it is now run by the third generation in the business. I think most of the Oliver parts have been sold. There were a lot of them back in the day, too.

When i was growing up the new tractors were "hundreds" and the "fifties", like 1800's and 1950's.

We were never a huge dealership and it was a big deal for us to sell the Voorhees a 4-150. Even before that it was a big deal to demonstrate automatic reset plows on that same farm. Bill Voorhees (forgive me if i have that spelled incorrectly) was plowing for the show and he picked up a rock the size of a 4 drawer filing cabinet between the bottoms. He lifted the plow, ran it to the fencerow, and somehow released it there and was back plowing in 2 minutes.

Anyhow, the dealership was a great place to grow up around, and later it was a great place to help run. I miss it still.

Though i'm not a restorer myself my nephew Jim has rebuilt some old Olivers and done well pulling them.

In the 50's and 60's, it was Farm and Timber Equipment in Chehalis, WA- Proprietor was Remo Wildhaber, who sold my neighbor a new 550 in about 1962 that started my love of Olivers. He's in his 80's now, and a good friend. He closed in the 60's, and Morrie's Garage became the Oliver/White dealer in the 70's. He lasted until about 8 years ago. No AGCO dealer in western Washington anymore.

Conder Farm Store, Elletsville, IN--The store is long gone. Millard has been gone a long time too, but I believe Dorothy (parts lady) is still around. Bought tractors, tillage tools, loaders, etc.
Also dealt with Fagg Oliver between Brazil and Terre Haute, IN--long gone.
And Sharp Bros. Implement, Indianapolis. Also gone.
Long after these disappeared, you could still go to R & J Oliver Sales up in Lebanon, IN, but a few years ago, that one closed up too.

As far as I remember (I'm 36) the dealer was R&J Oliver Sales in Lebanon IN. I even was parts manager there 1992-1995. Opened in 1969 and closed in 1999. Riley Brothers was over in Zionsville but closed up while I worked for R&J. The big money land investors run them off. Mrs. Riley was one heck of a parts "man". We now do business with Plevna Implement over east of Kokomo IN. They do quite a business with White (what's left of it), Massey, Fendt, and some short lines. Sell a bunch of White planters.

For the record I think Agco sucks.

Dorothy Conder. That lady put the fear of God in me when I was a little guy. Seemed like a big, mean lady to me. But she knew her Oliver parts. My Dad bought a lot of Oliver equipment from Conder's predecessor, Gifford. Riddle's in Spencer was an Oliver dealer for a while in the late sixties and early seventies. Dad bought a 1650 from them. Like you we did business with Fagg's, Sharp, and R & J. Now we get parts from a place on US 40 near Stilesville.

Jim,
I laughed when I saw your post, wasnt' sure anyone would know who that was. Small world, you must be close. I'd forgotten the Gifford name, never knew the place then, and not sure when Conder took over. I think he worked there for Gifford.
Besides Riddle, I believe Smith Farm Machinery in Cloverdale (primarily Allis Chalmers) also sold Olivers for a time. We still have the 1550 Dad bought new at Conder's to keep the place mowed. It just keeps going. I'll check out the place up at Stilesville. Thanks, dwm

Ed, you're right, I remember that place. It was near Borden on Hwy. 60. Couple of old brothers owned it I think. Went there looking for some parts for Dad's old Oliver-Superior drill. They had 'em. New old stock as they say. They had to get a ladder and go up in the attic. Place closed 7-8 years ago. I think one of the brothers died. While we're at it, here's a couple of more dealers. Blesch at Holland, IN, and one at Jasper, IN, don't remember their name. Good memories. Jim.

Hopson"s Sales and Service in Raritan, Il. owned by Dick Hopson and his wife. Dick started working there in "59 and worked his way up to owner. Good service and tons of parts in stock. Good people to deal with.

Oleblu are you from West Central Illinois? I was going to post about Hopson up in Raritan. My mother was from that area and I used to go wander around the lot when I was little. My grandfather was a Burrus dealer and delivered gas his building was right next to the implement lot I was just up there before Christmas to get a part for my Super 55. The more I look at that tractor the more I get the feeling I'll be up there a lot. Email me if you get the chance at ross@provineonline.com

I worked for Archie Implement Company in Archie, MO. in the early 70s. It was an Oliver dealership. It"s long gone now. No doubt Mr. Starr has a long list tucked away some place.
