Hi, Gerald! My name is Merlin, and I work for Cummins in Saint Paul. I have experience re-powering Olivers and Whites since 1991. The 505 will make a nice tractor engine, but it gets very expensive. You might want to consider a 174 horsepower or 200 horsepower 359 Cummins. The PTO shaft alone is going to run about $1300! The key to the whole job is make sure that you have the Large Over/Under unit. Do not put a 505 in front of a small three speed. You will need many of the same parts used on the 160,170,185 and 195 White tractors. If you purchase a new engine, the whole job is going to cost about $15K-$17K, depending on labor rates. If you use an engine out of a Case combine or a Magnum tractor, you'll spend $5K-$6K purchasing parts to properly equip it. Better off to purchase a new engine, and have it spec'd correctly. Either way, you'll end up with a wonderful machine! Best wishes, Merlin

Hi Merlin. I've got a White 2-155 also. It's in pretty good condition as we've always took good care of it. In-fact I just completely re-did the interior and we're just getting ready to re-paint the tractor. The engine is in fine condition and runs really well (usually better than our other machines) but we'd like to get more hp out of it. It's never been touched as far as turning it up at all, but some people have told us that it wouldn't hurt anything. Some dealers have told us that lots of people turn up around 200 hp and it doesn't hurt them. Others tell us that if you touch the motor than it'll be nothing but problems. Just wondering if you've got any experience with the White Hercules motors. Thanks Darren

Hi, Darren! Yes, I have re-built several White/Hercules engines. They are a very smooth running diesel, and can easily make a lot of power. The major drawback to them that I see is that they tend to operate very hot under heavy loads. I have seen a lot of farmers having to remove the side panels to keep their White running cool. Many of the older Hercules engines developed loose liners, so at rebuild it is necessary to install .005" oversize liners. I did this on the last one that I rebuilt: it was not fun. I had to enlarge each cylider with a rigid hone, and it took forever! The liners must have a proper press fit, or you will have trouble. Also, since the Hercules does not have a cross-flow head, you might want to consider either a straight pipe for the exhaust, or a very low restriction muffler that will reduce the operating temperature. Another thing, which would look good if properly done, would be to have some louvres punched into the side panels. Along with the factory stripes, they would look right at home. Oliver did this on the 2050/2150 by using mesh side panels. I really like the 2-135/2-155 tractors, but I think that for the long haul, it is better to invest in a Cummins engine for one of these. As long as your loads are reasonable, horsepower should not be a problem, as true horsepower is only measured against a load. Good luck on the re-paint: it will look sharp! Merlin

What is the difference between the small three speed and the large 3spd. Are there more clutches in the large 3spd to make it heavier duty or is everything just larger. Will a large 3 speed bolt in place of a small three speed or with minor modifications in an Oliver 2255 or White 2-150.

The heavy-duty O/U is just that. It has heavier internal parts and is physically larger than the standard O/U. All 2-180s and I think 4-210s had the HD O/U. I believe it was an option for the 2-135,155. I'm not sure if it will adapt to a 2255 do to the larger size and the rear trunnion mount is different. WB.

Is it longer than the small over/under and roughly how much bigger is it. The trunnion mount on the front of the transmission is removable; think it can be replaced with the larger one? Does the heavier O/U have the smae physical outside characteristics other than being larger.

I don't know that the lenght is longer, but it is taller. It also holds about 6 quarts of oil vs 4 on the other. If I get a chance, I'll measure my 2-180 vs my 1955. WB.

I'll be waiting for your answer. How much bigger is the trunnion mount? about 1/2 larger round or what roughly?
