head gasket

hi all, finally got around to putting the head back on an oliver 1650 diesel. according to the oliver museum, the serial number of my
oliver says that it is a 1600. i once ordered a pto shaft for a 1650 and it was too long. so now thinking it is a 1600 i ordered a
head gasket set for a 1600 and it is wrong, but when you look it up in the parts vendors they both can use the same gasket.
completely lost. any ideas?

I don't know. I will tell you that a little over 20 years ago, I had the head off my 1600 gas. I got a gasket from the dealer, put the head on, filled it with coolant and it was running right out the back between the head and block. I took it apart and one of the coolant passages didn't line up with the hole in the gasket. I went back to the dealer and got another one and that one was right. It leads me to think there must be two different head gaskets. I don't know if one is gas and the other is diesel or what the deal is.

What part number did you get?

I can tell you this- the parts book for a 1600 lists 155886A as the head gasket for all engines. The 1650/1655 parts book lists a few different head gaskets for engine types and serial number cutoffs, with 155886A being the head gasket for gas/LPG engines.

What is your tractor serial number? I'm sure the Floyd County Museum is correct if they're telling you it's a 1600. But who knows what's been swapped and done to the tractor over its life....

Also, what is your engine casting number? Here is an old BA Star post regarding casting numbers 1600 vs. 1650:

The only block (crankcase) used in the 1600 will have number 155 119A in raised numbers (second row) on the left hand side. -Same block used in both gas and diesel.

Gas 1650 used the following blocks: 155 119A, 157 972A, 157 973A, 159 004A and 163 368A

Diesel 1650 used blocks 158 544A and 159 891A to Serial number 187 585 (la Nova Cell engine).
164 817A, 165 624A and 166 425A were used in the Direct Injection engines Serial number 187 586 >.

hi, my oliver's serial number is 143314-607 and the middle engine casting number is 158544A. so even though the serial number says
its a 1600, the engine is a 1650. is this correct? i bought the head set from korves and will see if i can get an exchange. thanks
for your help. would like to know anything else you have to say.

Yes, based off your numbers you have a 1964 1600 with an early 1650 diesel engine.

According to the parts book you will need part number 158850A.

Also, back in the day J. Schwiebert on here recommended using the later Oliver 1800 head gasket as well, and the parts book lists two later head gaskets for the same serial number range, one of which is the same number as the 1650 I just gave you, and the other is 159320AS (listed as optional on the diesel and they called it a "gasket and fire ring set").

I'd give Korves a call and let them know. If they don't have it, I'm sure Maibach, AgPartsFirst, or Ricks could all help you out as well.

Also, there are different torque values among those engines. I don't have the 1650 service manual in front of me but you definitely don't want to overtorque it.

hi, thanks a lot for giving me this information. i wish i could have asked you months ago and saved a lot of time and effort. are
you of the same opinion about cracks in the head. this head had a number of them but not in the critical areas so i understand. do
you agree?

no, i didn't. the shop i used did not have the ability to do that. other members of the forum were mostly of the opinion that cracks
were normal for olivers and it just depends on where they are.

Yes, cracks are common on those heads. But all it takes is one of those cracks in the wrong spot, and you won't know until it's under pressure again. Hopefully it works out.
