Front axle question

So I was looking at the nice 1650 post below and noticed what I would call axle stabilizers, or wishbone is mounted on the underside of the axle. On our 1650 it is on the top. On our 1750 and my brothers 1755 it is on the underside of the axle. Just curious why this is and whats the difference if any at all.

Didn't I read just recently that the ones on top were for a wider tread? It seems like it was in the last feature article in Hart Parr Oliver Collector? The early ones were all over the top as far as I know, but until I read that, I thought all the later ones were underneath.

If you have access to both, measure and see if the center tube is wider on one. They use a different center steering arm for sure. One has the holes for the tie rod ends beveled up, the other one is beveled down.

I posted about that on my 1550. Mine is on top but I'd seen pictures of others on the bottom. I was told they were changed at some point. Early ones were on top.

I just debunked that. I went and measured a few. Actually, the ones with the brace underneath have about an inch longer center tube. I wonder if they made some wider ones with the brace on top for the 55 series or something? That would line up with that article.

My 1850 came off the assembly line August 8, 1966 according to the build card. It has the wishbone below the center tube. So the change was in effect midway through the third year of 1850 production.
