1800A won't start and I am at a lost?

A couple of days ago it started fine and I was mowing hay for a few hours. Yesterday I went to start it again, and it spit and sputtered a few times and fired a few times but then stopped. I tried again and again , and nothing. no firing . nothing.

I checked the carb and it was getting gas . When I checked the plugs , some were a little wet and others not. So I let it sit a few hours thinking it was flooded. Tried to start it again, and nothing. when I checked the carb air inlet, it was wet with fuel. so I thought it was a carb problem.

I took off the the carb (TSX 807) and cleaned all the jets with air and checked the float valve to see it was working and everything looked good. I installed it and tried starting the tractor again, and again nothing , no spitting or even trying to start, nothing.

I stared playing with the adjustment screws and now I can get it to fire but nothing that will keep it going. It spits and fires then dies.

I have come to the conclusion it is the carb that ios the problem. What is the correct adjustment of the screws on that carb?

Mine has two screw on top , one small screw and one larger screw.

Is the zenith carb a better carb and worth the money ?

. Any suggestion would be helpfull.

Sounds like the coil but could be condenser or appoints. I ve had the same situation a couple of times. You ll get it

First thing, before starting to take things apart, is to check for a spark, and its quality. If the spark is a strong, blue flash and will jump rather more than the usual plug gap it is unlikely the ignition system at fault.

A weak yellow spark requires further attention. Contact points are service items and the gap will only decrease with time - to where the points will burn due to the too-small gap. A good condenser is necessary to avoid rapid deterioration of the contact points. Current through the coil can be checked as can the spark at the king lead.

Only when the ignition circuit is functioning correctly, is it time to concentrate on the carburettor.

Lack of fuel, at some cylinders, could indicate a failed manifold gasket. Improper valve lash can also be a factor.

SUCCESS!!!! Took the advice here and looked at the electrical. First replaced the coil with a new coil i had laying around because that was the more easy, and nothing. Then I replaced the condensrr as some here suggested , it started right up on first turn over. Thanks for the help!!!!.

Now I have readjust the carb settings since I have been tinkering with all the carb settings thinking it was fuel related. Without this forum, I would have wasted days thinking it was carb related Thanks again for the help!!!!

If it was the condenser, the contact points either likely need attention or replacement.

No further comment necessary re dismantling unnecessary parts.

spark is always my first test and the quickest. pull the coil wire out just enough to see the wire end and crank it over, you will definitly
see and hear the spark. gas on the plugs would have said its a spark thingy also. plus if its running fine one day a carb dont just go out
of wack unless the float gets a hole in it. then it will be flooding and smoking black.

you were close...still could be a problem since both are typically changed at the same time.

Might not have been either, just a bad connection. I change the plug wires soon after getting this tractor, thing would sputter and die for no reason. A real head scratcher. I don't even know how I saw it, the coil wire on the cap would pop out but the boot kept it on the cap.

I had an old oliver guy rebuild the carb after I fooled with it...that is the last thing I will touch now. He said one of the needle threads were wore, he used some teflon tape to tighten it up. I would've never known what was loose.
