1800A Temp Gauge Problem

I started my 1800 gas today for the first time this year and the water temperature gauge spiked all thw way to high side. When I dropped the rpm to 600, it seemed to work fine. But as soon as I raise the rpms above 1000, the temp indicator starts to sputter and spiked to the high side of the gauge. What would cause this? I tried to find where the thermocouple is located in the block, and I can't find it any where.
How does that gauge work without a thermocouple?

You could have air trapped in the cooling system, low coolant, bad thermostat, etc.

I believe the sending unit is up front on the right side? of the thermostat housing, is it not?

on my 1800Atemp sender isbehind starter on left side of engine.would remove the radiator cap wild cold and see if any coolant is moving and at the correct level

I go deer in the headlights when you're talking anything electric, but could there be a corroded connection or something so that the generator is affecting it somehow at higher RPMs?
